Mohit Dubey & Roberto Capocchi - 7:30

1808 Second Street
Santa Fe New Mexico 87505
US (505) 690-9408 [map]
Price: $20

Dubey and Capocchi take listeners on a journey through the ages of the classical guitar from the baroque beauty of Bach, to the classical grace of Regondi, to the folk-inspired Venezuelan rhythms of Lauro, and finally to the undeniable 20th century French masterpiece, Libra Sonatine by Roland Dyens. The concert will also feature some of Dubey’s own arrangements of Ghanaian gyil music, Arabic popular music, and piano preludes by Alexandr Scriabin.

Classical guitarist, Mohit Dubey has played concerts across the world - from Santa Fe to Italy to Jordan to India - and has been a semifinalist in the Stroud Guitar Competition for three consecutive years. "Mohit Dubey wowed the audience in Hyderabad by strumming the compositions of Villa Lobos, Lauro, and Bach... but Mohit's classical expertise is certainly not limited to Western music" Times of India

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Roberto Capocchi is “an extremely expressive player, communicating depths of emotion in his performances that touch his audiences and move them to respond” Old Pueblo Guitar Gazette. His playing has been described as “a delight for the senses and the spirit” El Imparcial, HermosilloAfter winning a string of guitar competitions in Brazil, Mr. Capocchi has performed in concerts and competitions in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Belgium, and has recorded three CDs of solo and chamber music. The Arizona Daily Star noted he ”showed off solid classical guitar chops in a passionate, intense performance" of Rodrigo's “Concierto de Aranjuez” with the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra.

Thank you to Chase Morrison, for facilitating this concert series.

Tonight’s performance is made possible in part through the generosity of The LaSallian Christian Brothers, San Miguel Chapel, and St. Michael’s High School of Santa Fe.

Roberto Capocchi is a Brazilian classical guitarist recognized for his "rare musical refinement, polished technique and conscientious analysis of the music" (Violão Intercâmbio). He graduated from the Lins de Vasconcelos Conservatory and Carlos Gomes Music College. After winning a string of guitar competitions in Brazil, Mr. Capocchi completed graduate work on scholarship at the University of Arizona. His guitar teachers have included Sandra Costa, Henrique Pinto, Conrado Paulino, Thomas Patterson, and Jorge Caballero.

Roberto Capocchi has performed with many of Santa Fe's premier concert organizations such as The Lensic Performance Space, The Santa Fe Opera, and Santa Fe Desert Chorale. He has offered a number of solo, and chamber music performances locally with musicians such as violinist Ellen Chavez de Leitner, flutist Carol Redman, and tenor Andre Garcia-Nuthmann. He is on faculty at the United World College and New Mexico Higlands University, and is artist-in-residence at Adams State University. Roberto runs Santa Fe Guitar Academy, offering guitar instruction, workshops, and performance opportunities for aspiring guitar players.

Recent local highlights include "Los Pastores" with the New Mexico performing Arts Association, and chamber music performances at San Miguel Mission with Ellen Chavez de Leitner and The Castañeda Hotel, with Pleiades String Quartet. Last month he performed Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with Oliver Prezant and the SFCO.

Mr. Capocchi will retrun to San Muiguel April 29th to perform with flutist Tracy Kane Doyle.

The American harpsichordist, Kathleen McIntosh, has BMus from the University of Oregon, C.A.M.S. from King's College, London; and MMus from the University of Washington. Her main teachers were John Hamilton, Thurston Dart and Laurette Goldberg. She won the Lillian and Paul Petri Prize for Foreign Study, making possible her studies in England.

Kathleen McIntosh performs regularly with Santa Fe (NM) Pro Musica, Serenata de Santa Fe and the Taos Chamber Music Group. She has appeared as soloist with the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin in Moscow, the National Symphony Orchestra of Vietnam in Hanoi, the Sinfonica de Santiago in Santiago de Cuba, the New American Chamber Orchestra in Spain, the Camerata de la Casa del Lago in Mexico City, and with chamber orchestras throughout the western USA. She is a frequent guest of Conjunto Ars Longa in Havana, and of the Deya International Festival in Mallorca.

Kathleen McIntosh has played regularly in the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival since 1996, and in the Bravo! Vail Valley Festival since 1999. She has also been featured in the Tsuyama All-Round International Festival (Japan), LaJolla Summerfest (California) San Anselmo Organ Festival (California), New Texas Festival and Music from Angel Fire (NM) among others.

An exponent of contemporary music, Kathleen McIntosh appeared regularly on the series 20th Century Unlimited, and has been a guest of John Kennedy’s Santa Fe New Music. She has premiered works by Alex Shapiro, Tomiko Kohjiba and many others, with violinist Robin Lorentz, and with Marlow Fisher. In summer 2005 she played the first performance of a work by Melinda Wagner (commissioned by the Bravo Festival) with the Rossetti String Quartet.

The Los Angeles Reader wrote of her performance of the J.S. Bach Goldberg Variations that “her nearly flawless technique” and “understated eloquence. . . produced revelatory results”. Of her recording of the complete keyboard works of Boismortier, Continuo Magazine said “A breathtakingly beautiful performance.” Heard frequently on NPR’s ”Performance Today”, Kathleen McIntosh records for Gasparo CD's on harpsichords by John Phillips. She plays a work by Alex Shapiro (commissioned for her called Slipping) on her new disc, "Voices from the Kelp" (InNova Recordings), with violinist Robin Lorentz and percussionist Dan Morris. In July 2008 she released a recording: "Antonio Soler Sonatas" (Maricam Studio) with Eleven sonatas.

Santa Fe Guitar Academy

Foundation Exercises Workshop - 2PM-4PM

621 Velarde Street
Santa Fe New Mexico 87505
USA (505)577-1447 [map]
Price: FREE to SFGA students

Students, friends, and guitar players,

I am offering a FREE workshop at the Santa Fe Guitar Academy this Saturday January 30th at 2PM. We will be covering an extended version of our “Foundation Exercises” that help with comfort, relaxation, freedom of movement. This approach greatly facilitates techniques such as scales, chords, arpeggios, bars, and slurs, that we will cover in upcoming workshops. It is a practical workshop, so please bring your guitar and a notebook, and space is fairly limited, so please RSVP to save your spot.

No worries if you are nervous about playing in front of people, since we will be working together, and many of the exercises do not actually sound like music. If you have covered these in the past, come for a refresher, and to add the new materials and ideas to your practice. If you are studying them now, come get a boost. If you have never covered this, I am sure you will go home with some good improvements and new ideas for your playing. Style and level don't matter, either, since these are common issues to most guitarists. The only requirements are an open mind and the ability to follow simple instructions. I have had students describe it as an easy Yoga class for guitar playing, in case this gives you an idea.

The practice room can be a lonely place, and it is always inspiring to meet other guitarists who are working at improving their playing.

See you soon!

Roberto

Come enjoy a two-hour workshop with Brazilian guitarist Roberto Capocchi, and learn the basics of Bossa Nova, the charming Brazilian mix of Jazz and Samba. We will cover the basic chords shapes you will expect to find in this style and the basic rhythmic pattern associated with it. We will apply the rhythmic pattern to common chord sequences, explore a few rhythmic variations, and finally apply that to a song.

This is an intermediary level class, where we will build on the guitar playing you already have. No need for amazing chops, but it is not an introduction to guitar playing.

Roberto Capocchi has performed in every major venue in Santa Fe, from the Lensic to to Santa Fe Opera, and has collaborated with artists such as David Grussin and Carol Redman. He is Artist-in-Residence at Adams State University, and is on faculty at United World College, Santa Fe Guitar Academy, and New Mexico Highlands University. He holds advanced degrees in Performance and Music Theory, and has extensive touring experience as a recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral soloist. He enjoys playing music from his native country, mostly in the forms of Bossa Nova, Samba, and Choro. This is his second collaboration with the Music Education department of the Candyman, with more to come!

El Rancho de las Golondrinas is a living history museum located on 200 acres in a rural farming valley just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The museum, dedicated to the history, heritage and culture of 18th and 19th century New Mexico, opened in 1972. Original colonial buildings on the site date from the early 1700s. In addition, historic buildings from other parts of northern New Mexico have been reconstructed at Las Golondrinas. Villagers clothed in the styles of the times show how life was lived on the frontier in early New Mexico.

The Eldorado Hotel is a landmark in downtown Santa Fe. For many years it's ample lounge was a favorite place for tourists and locals to mingle. It was one of my favorite salsa dancing spots. After extensive renovations, it is reopening the bar, unveiling new ballrooms, and it's new, gorgeous chapel - full of natural light and beautiful sounding.

I'm glad to be playing a little for the festivities, and look forward to enjoying the new digs with local cohorts and visiting friends.
